BRIEF NOTES FOR CURATORS, ORGANISERS, AND LISTENERS-PARTICIPANTS
_ These live performances are different from regular music concerts.
_ Listening is a creative and active act. As listeners, we adopt an active role, and our act of listening becomes performative. This event demands and rewards the work of attention and commitment to the experience.
_ This kind of experiential listening practice invites for a shift of attitude, a transformation in the perceived roles of both audience and performer, and questioning of dominant behaviour codes and rituals. The event strives for breaking the common understanding of music/art merely as “entertainment” and “spectacle”. Participants re-pattern their listening habits and expectations.
_ The performance space needs to be reconfigured for the event following a simple set of principles and strategies. The architectural, technical, curatorial and social circumstances which are specific to each context and venue should be negotiated.
_ This is about being ‘inside’ the sound instead of listening ‘to’ it. The performance uses a multichannel sound system (quadraphonic, eight-channel or other configurations). Not frontal stereo systems. The array of speakers surrounds the participants, who can sit or lie anywhere within the space.
_ No stage. The artist operates from within the audience or from behind, controlling the sound as it is heard by the participants. This configuration helps to minimise visual distractions and avoids the territorialization produced by conventional theatrical arrangements. This is invisible music.
_ Listening in the dark. The venue should be darkened as much as possible during the performance. Visual darkness allows the brain to devote less cognitive resources to non-auditory stimuli, enhancing the aural performativity and sustained attention of the participants. Provision of blindfolds can be helpful in some settings to help to produce darkness and to focus the attention of the listeners-participants.
_ The performance cultivates intense and transformative personal experiences within a shared social space and time. It is a practice of collective intimacy, exploratory listening and enjoyment.
